A Primer on Ranking High in Search Engine Results

Today, you can create a great looking website and have it go live within a couple of hours. But once your website is on the web, you have to take certain steps to get people to notice it. There are many techniques you can use to generate interest in your website, and you should make sure you approach drawing attention to your site from numerous angles, so you’re sure you don’t miss anyone.

But anyone who has been on the web for a while will tell you that the key to getting sustained traffic to your site is ranking on the first page of search engine results for keywords that are relevant to your site. For example, if you have a site that’s all about duckpin bowling, you would want to rank high on Google search engine results when people search on “duckpin bowling.”

How can you do this? Generally it is a multi-pronged approach, but one of the most important steps is to determine which keywords you want to rank highly for in search engine results, and then do certain things to bring your ranking up as high as possible. You will want to differentiate between mass traffic keywords and what are called “buyer keywords.” Both are important, but if you own a local business, you will want to place special emphasis on buyer keywords.

Buyer keywords are the keywords that will lead interested parties directly to your site. For instance, if you sell knitting yarn and you’re located in Atlanta, you want your site to show up on the first page of search results when people search on terms like “knitting yarn Atlanta.” You can take special steps to get into Google’s local search, and that will help, but you also need to work on search engine optimization (SEO) overall.

Many website owners turn to SEO optimization firms to help them make changes that will move them upward in the search engine rankings. While big companies may spend tens of thousands of dollars hiring SEO specialists, you don’t have to do this to get real results. In some cases you can download free software into which you enter keywords you want your site to rank highly for, and you will get back a report analyzing your site. You will also receive concrete suggestions for changes in your site or marketing strategy, as well as resources to help you with things like article marketing and use of social networks.

Every website wants to rank high on Google search engine results. And if you’re willing to put in some time and effort, you can do a lot on your own to increase your search engine rankings. But the first step is finding out what your site’s strengths and weaknesses are and what your best choices are for mass traffic keywords and buyer keywords.

Once you know these things, you will be able to develop a plan for improving traffic and search engine rankings that includes things like writing articles relevant to your site, developing your site’s social media presence, and making sure your site has a steady supply of fresh, unique, relevant content.
